What’s all the hype about Detox?
Detoxification is your body’s natural process of changing dietary and environmental toxins into less harmful substances before eliminating them from your body. Supporting natural detoxification processes can help improve digestive function and may facilitate healthy weight loss, however the benefits do not stop there as healthy detoxification pathways may also lead to a reduction in other seemingly unrelated symptoms, such as sore joints or painful periods. Even if you’re fit and well, for many people a regular detox leaves them feeling more energised whilst reducing their toxin load.
Why are we toxic?
We encounter toxins everywhere, from our household cleaning products, personal care items, plastic food packaging, furniture, and even in some foods we eat due to pesticide residues or toxic metal contaminants. Our own bodies even produce toxins as a by-product of normal body functions on a daily basis.
A common source of toxicity for many people is an imbalanced gut microbiota or gut flora. Your body is designed to remove these toxins via the channels of elimination, i.e. your liver, kidneys, bowels and skin; however it is possible for these channels to become overwhelmed, depending upon your level of exposure, and this may reduce your overall health and well-being.
Many common complaints can be improved through a practitioner guided detox, including:
- Skin conditions
- Gut symptoms
- Joint aches and pains
- Exposure to heavy metals and environmental toxins
We suggest that you avoid caffeine, alcohol and processed foods, and start eating organic whole foods as a way of starting the detox process. Massage, dry skin brushing and light exercise also help the body circulate and remove toxins.
Developing a detox program that’s right for you!
Our Naturopath’s will take a thorough health history from you to determine if there are any issues that warrant further testing or investigation, such as heavy metal levels or high oxidative stress. We then develop an individualised detoxification support program for you which may include the use of herbs and nutrients that aid the liver, bowels, kidneys, skin and lymphatic system.
We tend to find that those who do follow a detox program adapt some of the healthier diet and lifestyle changes into their regular routine permanently. Regular detox, often done at the change of season, is very effective at breaking cravings and bad patterns that have developed if motivation has slipped, making detox a great addition to your long term wellness plan!
